WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina – The greatness of our nation is epitomized by our service members and Veterans. Memorial Day’s conception was born through the grief and dedication of women decorating the graves of fallen soldiers before the end of the civil war. Over time the dates and stories have changed and evolved, but one truth remains, Memorial Day is reserved for pause and united reflection to honor the brave women and men willing to give their lives for the idea and hope of America.
“This Memorial Day, we must not forget that we are a nation at war. We must not forget the responsibility we hold to ensure our servicemen and Veterans receive the support and care that they deserve. We must not forget that in spite of the challenges that divide our nation, there is far more that unites us.
In this spirit, my thoughts and prayers are with the men and women in service for our nation across the globe. I pray for the safe return of our heroes in combat overseas and for the families of the 4,080 members of the U.S. military that have died in the Iraq war and the 502 servicemen and women who have died in Afghanistan. This Memorial Day, I hope that all of the hard working people of the 5th District can find time to reflect and express our appreciation.”
