This week the U.S. House of Representatives, in a bi-partisan effort, voted to override President Bush´s veto of a $23 billion water-resources and conservation bill that would provide much needed assistance for areas of the 5th district that have suffered under the current drought in North Carolina.(more)

09/16/07 - Foxx Hangs Farmers Out to Dry, Roy Carter Responds
Being an Agriculture Teacher and coming from a farming background, I find the lack of support unbelievable and reprehensible. This is another reason I am running against Virginia Foxx.(more)

Economy

As YOUR Congressman Roy Carter will…

  • Work for real Economic Development that Brings Jobs Back to Western NC
  • Call for reform of NAFTA and support collective bargaining agreements that keep wages high and ends the ramped outsourcing of American jobs
  • Fight to cap interest rates on emergency loans so that working class families aren’t thrown into an endless cycle of debt when an emergency occurs
  • Support sustainable development by partnering with the Appalachian Regional Commission and calling for more local farmer and trade markets.
  • Host a regional economic development symposium to bring together small business owners and local leaders to advance our common interests.
  • Focus on bringing “green jobs” to our region to get ahead of the curve in the future free-market economy

Our Opponent’s Record

    • In 2006 Virginia Foxx traveled to Taiwan, in part, to seal our free trade agreement between the US and Taiwan, resulting in the outsourcing of American jobs.
    • Under Foxx’s watch we have seen gas prices skyrocket, jobs leave, and a severe downturn in our economy. This, all while she was raving that our economy was in great shape.

Education

As YOUR Congressman I will…
  • Demand that we replace No Child Left Behind with a fully funded program developed by leading educators to ensure that every child in America has a fantastic public education. We must ensure teachers and schools have the tools and control they need to be successful.
  • Expand and enhance the Head Start program.
  • Expand and increase funding for Pell Grants, and reduce interest rates on need-based federal student loans.
  • Increase parental involvement by rewarding schools for both academic and extracurricular success. As a teacher in some of North Carolina´s most challenging schools I was able to set up several innovative student and community programs to combat drop-out rates, drug and alcohol abuse, and illiteracy. These programs worked because they focused on building self esteem and rewarding students for their progress.
  • Expand and fully fund SCHIP to reduce the anxiety placed on working families due to health related issues.
  • Work with local educators, school districts, and education experts to develop a curriculum that encourages students with great interest and skill in vocational and technical education, opportunities to graduate from High School with a vocational or technical diploma. This would significantly decrease drop-out rates and strengthen our workforce.

As YOUR Congressman I will…
  • End the tax breaks for the large oil corporations and work to increase fuel efficiency in our cars. America must free itself from dependency on foreign oil.
  • Lead the fight to protect our planet by demanding that all government buildings be constructed at "green standards" and making my own Congressional office carbon-neutral.
  • Protect the natural beauty of western North Carolina from irresponsible destruction so that our children may continue taking pride in the heritage that has been handed down through us to them.
